Family Fun Night at the Highland Speedway

HIGHLAND IL (June23, 2012) – The Highland Speedway kicked off the summer with a night of racing mixed with entertainment for the whole family. Besides great racing action from the Highland Speedway’s Sport Mods, Factory Stocks and Sport Compacts, which ran double features, the Gateway Vintage Race Cars brought a full field of classic racecars.

Everyone was entertained during the intermission by a frozen T-Shirt contest, a nickel race for the kids, and rides around the speedway provided by the Vintage Racers. At the end of the evening the track crew staged a Gauntlet race and area Demo drivers put on a Demo Derby. It was Family Fun Night sponsored by B-Dry Systems with added sponsorship by the Hamel Co-op.

Sport Mods

There is no short supply of talent in the Sport Mod Division at the Highland Speedway. This newly formed class has taken on its own personality with a mixture of veteran and rookie drivers.

The night cap began with a battle for second between Rob Lee and Marty Smith Jr, as Jeremy Thole in the 14 took command at the start….midway through the feature Lee and Smith tangled in turns 3 and 4 leaving Smith sitting stalled and causing a yellow. On the restart it was Thole and Lee on the high side and Tyler Diebert working the low groove.

On the final turn on the white flag lap both Diebert and Lee took a run on Thole, Diebert pushed up from the bottom and slowed Thole’s momentum allowing Lee’s charge stick and the driver of the 88 pulled ahead just at the finish line to take home yet another trophy in this new division Thole had to settle for second and Diebert third.
