Becker Jewelers Late Models

The premier class of the Highland Speedway is the Becker Jewelers Super Late Models and they never fail to excite the crowds with unpredictability and tremendous racing action.
The feature event lined up with pole sitter Rick “The Salty Dog” Salter in the 1S choosing the outside starting spot, this positioned the dash runner up, “Fast” Frankie Martin from DuQuoin Il on the inside of the front row. The remainder of the lineup was in row two, the 38J of Jake Little and Rick Standridge in the 12. The row three line up was the 11K of Shannon Kuhn and the T4 of Adam Tischhauser. In row four sat the 78 of Chad Zobrist and the 38L of Ryan Little.
Kloos Earns Big Check From MARS
Harrison, Smith, & Isaak Win

Highland IL (May31,2012) A special weekday event and an added purse always brings out the best in racing at the Highland Speedway, and this past Thursday it was no exception. The Mid America Racing Series (MARS) was in town to battle the regulars and some of the Midwest finest traveling All Star racers. It was the first leg of the Tri State Challenge.
This spring we have witnessed an array of weather at the Speedway from extreme heat to almost fall type weather and last night’s weather was the later. The Highland Speedway Track Crew worked diligently throughout the day and provided an excellent race course. After the track crew spent intermission grooming the ¼ mile surface a mist came over the Speedway as the MARS- Becker Jewelers Late Models were lining up for their feature. A few quick warm up laps and with the mist subsiding for the moment the field of 21 took the green flag with Daryn Kline in the number 10 leading the way. Alongside of Kline was the “Trenton Tornado” Michael Kloos driving the 6K Gerstner and Son’s entry out of Breese IL. In the second row inside was the 24 belonging to the 2011 UMP National Champion hailing from El Paso IL, Ryan Unzicker and along side of him was the winner of last week’s feature event at Highland “Fast” Frankie Martin of DuQuoin IL on the outside. “The Flatland Flash” Kevin Weaver and Kevin Cole sat in row three.
Before one lap was completed coming out of turn two disaster nearly eliminated the top three cars as Kline, Kloos and Unzicker tangled and the resulting mêlée had sheet metal damage on the 10 and 24 and Kloos sitting atop a large tractor tire used to mark the inside perimeter of the track. Luckily for all involved no series damage was done and the race got under way, this time for 21 caution free laps.
“Fast” Frankie & The Sellers Score Big At Highland
HIGHLAND IL ( May 26, 2012) It was an evening of remembering those who have made the greatest of all sacrifices, complete with an Honor Guard and a 21 gun salute…..It was a Memorial Day Observance at the Highland Speedway sponsored by Miller Lite.
Becker Jewelers Late Models

After nearly an hour and forty five minute delay for an electrical problem with the lights in turns three and four. The Becker Jewelers Late Models hit the track running.
Pole sitter Ryan Little from Springfield IL, in the 38L choose the outside starting position and “Fast” Frankie Martin from DuQuoin IL was positioned on the pole. Little thinking the high side would give him an advantage wasn’t counting on Martin, a long time competitor of the Highland Speedway knowing how to make any lane work to his advantage and Martin led the first lap, in fact “Fast” Frankie was in command of the night cap for the Late Models from the start, but it wasn’t an easy run. Behind him and Little were Mike Schulte, Dan Jacober in row two Daryn Klein in the 10 and Steven Unterbrink in the 4S making up the third row. Michael Kloos in the 6K, and Brent Helmkamp in the 31 made up row four.
Kloos was a man on a mission, by lap three he moved up one position to sixth. A spin by Dan Jacober on lap five bunched the field with Martin in the lead followed by Little, Schulte, Kloos was now fourth. It was Martin and Little running the high side around the Speedway and Schulte and Kloos working the bottom. Lap twelve Kloos passed Schulte and set his sights on the leaders.
On lap 15 things started to get interesting. Martin had reached the back of the field, while he had a substantial lead over the 38 and 6K, the traffic ahead was heavy. Kloos finally surpassed the 38 of Little. Not only was the second generation driver from Trenton trying to run down the leader, but he also was fighting his way through the lap traffic.

HIGHLAND IL (May 19, 2012) It was Armed Forces Night sponsored by Scott Credit Union, this week any active Military personal received free admission to the Speedway and they were treated to one fantastic night of racing.
Becker Jewelers Late Models

The Becker Jewelers Late Models last week went Green to Checker in their night cap, this week it was 17 laps in before the caution flew but we’re getting ahead of our story.
Pole sitter and Dash Winner Mike Schulte, driving the 27S, choose to start on the outside of the front row to lead the field to the green on the 25 lap main event. Last week’s winner, last year’s point Champion AND current Highland Speedway point’s leader Chad Zobrist sat inside on the front row. Dan Jacober in the 22 and Michael Kloos made up row two and “Fast” Frankie Martin and young upstart Adam Tishhauser in the 4T were the last of the first six that made the transfer from the Dash.
Schulte took the point on the high side at the drop of the green flag. Several times during the first 5 laps it went three wide as Schulte, Zobrist and Kloos battled for the lead finally at lap 7 Zobrist made the move and took the lead for the next several laps it was Zobrist and Schulte running the high line around The Highland Speedways ¼ mile oval, while Kloos and Martin were making the bottom work for them. By lap 13 it was clearly evident that the race was shaping up to be a battle between Zobrist and Kloos although Zobrist in his 78 machine developed a commanding lead over the 6K of Kloos.
Zobrist, Harrison, Salter, Winners at Highland

HIGHLAND IL (May 12, 2012) It’s always exciting when a feature event goes green to checker, leaders dealing with lap cars, drivers not having time to slow and catch their breath, it becomes a very intense race. The Becker Jewelers Late Model feature this past Saturday night at the Highland Speedway was one of those races.
Rick “The Salty Dog” Salter was the Pole Sitter by virtue of his dash win and having the choice, he started on the outside of the front row with defending points Champion to his left. At the drop of the green it was The Salty Dogs race to lose, and for 23 laps it was, but running inside of lap traffic Salter was held up by a lap car allowing not only Zobrist but also last week’s winner “Fast” Frankie Martin to skate by. At the checker flag it was Zobrist sitting in the Casey’s General Store Victory Lane, Martin, Salter, Michael Kloos, and Matt Taylor rounding out your top five.

Steve Schmitt Modifieds
Judging by the number of people picking the 24 of Mile Harrison to win the Feature event in the Highland Highland Speedway’s “Pick 3” contest it was no surprise the current National Champ
captured the Steve Schmitt Modified feature win and parked the number 24 in the Casey’s General Stores Victory Lane. Chad Sellers hung tuff but Harrison took the win by several car lengths. Tyler Diebert in the 84 was third, Justin Ketrow, and Brad Venhaus completed the top five.
